Complementary food in this opinion, comprises therefore, all liquid, semisolid and solid foods other than breast milk and infant formula or follow-on formula that are fed to infants. Complementary food can be beverages, spoon-fed foods or finger food.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b45f116 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"b45f116\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Recommendations:<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-cefa1a1 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"cefa1a1\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends:<\/p><p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u2022 Breastfeed exclusively (no other foods or drinks) for the first 6 months of your baby\u2019s life.<br \/>\u2022 After 6 months of age, continue to breastfeed and begin to add solid foods (this is when weaning begins).<br \/>\u2022 After your baby\u2019s first birthday, continue to breastfeed for as long as both you and your baby are comfortable. Some mothers and babies continue to nurse into the toddler years and beyond<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1b1776c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1b1776c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How to wean your baby?<\/h2>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b45322c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"b45322c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u2022 Weaning works best when it happens slowly, in its own time.<br \/>\u2022 You will need to substitute your milk with formula if your baby is younger than 1 year. If your baby is older than 1 year, you can stop offering the breast and drop one feeding a time, over several weeks. <br \/>\u2022 Start by taking away his or her least favorite feeding first. Nursing sessions that come before falling asleep or after waking are often the ones to go last. Wait a few days to drop another feeding.<br \/>\u2022 Talk to your child about weaning. Even young children can understand what you are saying and offer their opinions and ideas for how best to stop breastfeeding.<br \/>\u2022 Practise good hygiene and proper food handling<br \/>\u2022 Start at 6 months with small amounts of food and increase gradually as the child gets older<br \/>\u2022 Gradually increase food consistency and variety<br \/>\u2022 Increase the number of times that the child is fed: 2\u20133 meals per day for infants 6\u20138 months of age and 3\u20134 meals per day for infants 9\u201323 months of age, with 1\u20132 additional snacks as required<br \/>\u2022 Use fortified complementary foods or vitamin-mineral supplements as needed<br \/>\u2022 During illness, increase fluid intake including more breastfeeding, and offer soft, favourite foods.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Complementary feeding, as defined by the World Health Organization, is \u201cthe process starting when breast milk or breast milk substitute alone is no longer sufficient to meet the nutritional requirements of infants\u201d so that \u201cother foods and liquids are needed, along with breast milk\u201d.
